This book is wonderful! The pictures are beautiful and you sweep you away into the story's magic. If you are on the fence about buying this version or not, buy it! It's a classic that never gets old no matter what time of year it is. I love this book. My 8 year old loves it too.

The simplified retelling of the original story is OK for younger viewers. However, I thought the art was below average. Perhaps I have high standards (I am a professional artist), but the illustrations could have been done by a 12-yr old. Very uninspired and generic.
I got the illustrated version of "The Nutcracker" done by the Russian artist Denis Gordeev (not available from BOMC), and it is gorgeous. Gordeev actually researched the historic period, facial types, and costumes before illustrating; I wish it could be done by Jeffers, too. When the artist fails to do the work required, it just looks sloppy - sorry. I sent the book back.

It is a beautifully illustrated book but don't care for the differences made from the original story.
