The Nutcracker

Remember seeing The Nutcracker ballet when you were a child? The Sugar Plum Fairy and her graceful candy attendants, elegant ladies in jewel-toned ball gowns and their handsome companions, the toy soldiers ready for battle, and, of course, the brave little girl who saved her beloved Nutcracker from the seven-headed Mouse King?

With a pure storyteller’s voice and the stunning illustrations for which she is renowned, New York Times bestselling artist Susan Jeffers transports us all, especially the littlest reader, into an enchanted world. This is the perfect gift to share with children before they see The Nutcracker, but anyone who has seen this ballet will cherish this magical story where love saves the day. (Ages 4-6)

It's a must!

This book is wonderful! The pictures are beautiful and you sweep you away into the story's magic. If you are on the fence about buying this version or not, buy it! It's a classic that never gets old no matter what time of year it is. I love this book. My 8 year old loves it too.

The simplified retelling of the original story is OK for younger viewers. However, I thought the art was below average. Perhaps I have high standards (I am a professional artist), but the illustrations could have been done by a 12-yr old. Very uninspired and generic. I got the illustrated version of "The Nutcracker" done by the Russian artist Denis Gordeev (not available from BOMC), and it is gorgeous. Gordeev actually researched the historic period, facial types, and costumes before illustrating; I wish it could be done by Jeffers, too. When the artist fails to do the work required, it just looks sloppy - sorry. I sent the book back.

It is a beautifully illustrated book but don't care for the differences made from the original story.
