This darkly brilliantly bestseller from the award-winning author of I Am the Messenger is the tale of a young girl living in Nazi Germany who discovers the awesome power—and danger—of words.
Recounted by Death itself—a hapless narrator overwhelmed by the souls it has to collect—this groundbreaking novel tells the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster child living outside Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence by stealing when she discovers something she can’t resist: books. Soon, she’s stealing them from Nazi book-burnings and sharing them with neighbors during bombing raids—and with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. Filled with astonishing, three-dimensional characters, The Book Thief is simply mesmerizing.

This book touched my heart. I LOVED every word, and all the characters. I also enjoyed the writing style.

This book is very hard to put down. It shows you the best side of the German people during the war. The characters are so real you feel you know them. I have given it to several friends and all my children.

I haven't even finished this book but I can tell you that it is one of the best that I have ever read. The characters come to life in exquisite detail and the narration of the story is done in a way that will haunt you throughout. This book is a must read.

I have had this book for quite some time and just had not gotten around to reading it...well, if I had only known how much I would love it, it would have been my first read! It is very hard to put down once starting. I found myself staying up really late to see what would happen next in Leisel's life. This book touched me and I finished it tears also like some of the other reviews mentioned. It is now one of my favorites and I told my teenage daughter she really has to read this soon! This story has stayed with me since finishing it, you wont be disappointed.
